Black Moon Jar

There is a well-judged balance to this finely-crafted Moon Jar, a minimalist work in Korean Black Ware.

The pure spherical form is beautiful as a vase or as a stand-alone piece.

The finish is matte, with a subtle brushed texture.  The foot and lip are precisely shaped, and the work is inscribed with the artist's signature just above the foot.

Black Ware, with its distinctive iron black glaze, has been produced in Korea since the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392).  A smooth black glaze with a rich gloss was perfected during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897), while some Black Ware has a matte textured finish with subtle rust undertones.
