This slender oblong work is a minimalist expression of the centuries-old art of Korean Black Ware.

The finish is matte black with a subtle brushed texture.  The edges are gently rounded, and the piece is lifted above the table top on small inline feet at the corners. The clay is a very dark brown colour and visible on the underside, which is hollow.

The ceramic platform is a traditional item of the Korean interior. A simple way to add beauty to daily life, it literally elevates whatever you put on top, like a small sprig of flowers or a few sweets.

Black Ware, with its distinctive iron black glaze, has been produced in Korea since the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392).  A smooth black glaze with a rich gloss was perfected during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897), while some Black Ware has a matte textured finish with subtle rust undertones.
