This simple cylindrical work is a minimalist expression of the centuries-old Korean Black ware tradition.
Crafted from a rich dark brown clay that is visible on the underside, it has a matte black finish with a subtle brushed texture.
The underside is hollow and the piece may also be displayed upturned as a vessel.
The ceramic platform is a traditional item of the Korean interior. A simple way to add beauty to daily life, it literally elevates whatever you put on top, like a small sprig of flowers or a few sweets.

Black Ware, with its distinctive iron black glaze, has been produced in Korea since the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392). A smooth black glaze with a rich gloss was perfected during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897), while some Black Ware has a matte textured finish with subtle rust undertones.
