We feel very honoured to be able to offer this precious little container from a master ceramic artist known for crafting large Onggi and Buncheong Ware jars.
This work is crafted from a dark grey clay that can be seen on the underside, and is covered with a smooth black glaze. The glaze has only a minimal gloss and covers the inside surfaces of the box and its lid.
The edges are slightly rounded and the lines and planes of the box are not perfectly straight, showing the mark of the artist's hands in the finished work. The spontaneous and unaffected character of this work embodies the spirit of Korean ceramics.
Lidded boxes are a traditional item of the Korean interior. They are used to hold anything from incense or a mini moss garden to nuts or traditional sweets. A simple and beautiful way to store, serve or display special things every day.

Black Ware, with its distinctive iron black glaze, has been produced in Korea since the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392). A smooth black glaze with a rich gloss was perfected during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897), while some Black Ware has a matte textured finish with subtle rust undertones.
